The Fort Greene Council, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization with 501c3 status, established in 1973 as a community based organization. The headquarters is located at 966 Fulton Street in Central Brooklyn's Community District #2, Department of Education - Region #8. For 35 years, the Council has served Central Brooklyn's elderly and youth, currently overseeing over 15 senior citizen centers, and two day care centers. It also delivers nearly 800 meals per day to the homebound. The Council has the largest number of sites among African-American funded agencies by the NYC Department for the Aging.

The Council is one of the longest continuous human service organizations in Brooklyn that was founded by people of African ancestry to serve the elderly and children. With over 35 years of experience, the Council provides comprehensive services to the elderly including breakfast, lunch, home delivered meals, educational and recreational programs and activities, legal assistance, social services, transportation services, and information and referral services. Likewise, for 32 years, the Day Care Programs have been an integral part of the Bedford Stuyvesant and Fort Greene communities in Brooklyn, providing quality early childhood education. Our Universal Pre- Kindergarten provide services to children 2-4 years old, and our Out of School Time Program (OST) serves school aged children from grades 1-6.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Council founded the the only jazz and R&B program for seniors in New York City. Jazz 966 was launched at 966 Fulton Street to promote jazz for the community and the public at large. On Friday nignts, Jazz 966 provides a warm, comfortable and family setting for jazz in Central Brooklyn.
