Emergencies can happen when we least expect them — from power outages and severe weather to coastal storms. Taking a few simple steps today can make all the difference in keeping yourself and your loved ones safe tomorrow.
Here’s how to get started:
1. Create an Emergency Support Network
No one should go through an emergency alone. Choose at least two trusted people — friends, neighbors, caregivers, or family — who will check in on you and help if needed. Share keys, exchange phone numbers, and make sure they know where to find your emergency supplies and important health information.
2. Prepare Your Supplies
Keep bottled water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, and copies of essential documents ready in a “Go Bag.” Don’t forget your medications — always try to keep at least a 7-day supply on hand and talk to your doctor or pharmacy about emergency refills.
3. Plan for Medical Needs
If you rely on medical equipment that uses electricity (like oxygen or dialysis), contact your medical supplier about backup batteries or generators. You can also register with your utility company as a life-sustaining equipment customer to receive priority assistance during power outages.
4. Stay Informed
Sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s free emergency alert system, to receive up-to-date information by phone, text, or email. Visit NYC.gov/NotifyNYC, download the Ready NYC app, or call 311 to register.
5. Plan for Your Pets, Too!
If you have a pet or service animal, include them in your emergency plan — pack extra food, water, and copies of vaccination records.
Being prepared gives peace of mind — and keeps our
