Preparing Today

for a More Secure Tomorrow

As we celebrate Long-Term Care Planning Month, Fort Greene Council encourages older adults and families to take time to plan for the future. This observance shines a light on the financial, emotional, and logistical challenges that accompany aging, while reminding us how proactive planning can protect our independence, dignity, and peace of mind.

With Americans living longer and healthcare costs steadily rising, long-term care planning is more crucial than ever. Understanding your options and putting a plan in place today can make all the difference tomorrow.

💡 What is Long-Term Care?

Long-term care includes a wide range of services and supports that help people meet their personal and medical needs over time. This can include help with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility, or more advanced care in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or at home with professional caregivers.

Many people mistakenly assume that Medicare or standard health insurance will fully cover long-term care costs — but in most cases, these expenses are paid out of pocket. Without proper planning, the financial impact can be significant, especially for those living on fixed incomes.

🌿 Why Planning Ahead Matters

Creating a long-term care plan ensures that you have the resources, support, and choices needed to age with confidence. It allows you to:

  • Maintain independence and quality of life

  • Avoid placing sudden financial or caregiving burdens on loved ones

  • Ensure your wishes are clearly documented and respected

  • Reduce uncertainty during times of health change or crisis

Proactive planning also helps families have important conversations early—about care preferences, finances, and living arrangements—so everyone understands the plan and can honor it.

📘 Key Steps in Long-Term Care Planning

  1. Evaluate Your Options

Learn about the full range of care options available, from home-based services to assisted living and nursing facilities.

  2. Understand the Costs

In 2023, the average annual cost of a private nursing home room exceeded $100,000, while in-home health aide services averaged about $60,000 per year.

  3. Explore Financial Tools

Look into long-term care insurance, health savings accounts (HSAs), or Medicaid eligibility to help offset costs.

  4. Discuss Your Preferences

Talk openly with family about what matters most — from where you wish to live to how you want medical and financial decisions handled.

  5. Create a Legal Plan

Prepare important documents such as a living will, healthcare proxy, and power of attorney to ensure your care and assets are managed according to your wishes.

1️⃣ Getting Started

Taking the first step toward long-term care planning may feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. Consider reaching out to:

  • A financial advisor for budgeting and savings guidance

  • An elder law attorney to prepare legal documents

  • A long-term care specialist or social worker for care coordination and support resources

The earlier you start, the more options you’ll have—and the more control you’ll maintain over your future.

📍 The Bottom Line

Long-term care planning isn’t just for older adults—it’s for everyone. Health challenges can arise unexpectedly at any age, and having a plan in place helps ensure that your care preferences are honored and your loved ones are supported.

This October, let’s take time to talk, plan, and prepare for the future—because peace of mind starts with a plan.
