Founded in Brooklyn in 1973, Fort Greene Council, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing programs and services across the lifespan.
FGC operates Older Adult Centers throughout Brooklyn, providing older adults with opportunities for social connection, wellness, recreation, education, cultural enrichment, and nutritious meals in welcoming community environments. FGC also operates Young Minds UPK-4, providing early childhood education to Brooklyn families.
About the Assistant Chef Position
The Assistant Chef supports the daily operation of the kitchen at one of FGC’s Older Adult Centers. This position plays an important role in helping ensure that meals are prepared and served safely, efficiently, and in accordance with NYC Aging meal service standards, food safety regulations, and FGC requirements.
The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, motivated, team-oriented, and comfortable working in a busy kitchen environment. We are looking for someone who takes food safety seriously, pays attention to detail, works well with others, and understands the importance of providing quality meals and positive service to our older adult community.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Prepare, cook, and assist with serving meals in accordance with NYC Aging meal service guidelines.
Maintain proper food temperatures, portion control, and safe food-handling practices.
Complete required kitchen documentation, including Daily Food Use Sheets and Monthly Inventory Reports.
Maintain food safety and sanitation standards throughout the kitchen.
Ensure kitchen equipment is properly cleaned, maintained, and safely operated.
Report equipment issues and maintenance needs to the Program Director.
Maintain accurate food and supply inventories and assist with ordering as needed.
Ensure proper storage of dry, refrigerated, and frozen food.
Conduct daily refrigerator and freezer temperature checks.
Assist with kitchen setup and cleanup in collaboration with the Kitchen Technician and Custodian.
Promote effective teamwork and maintain a respectful and professional work environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
Candidates should have:
A High School Diploma or equivalent.
At least one year of commercial kitchen experience.
Experience in institutional or community-based food service is preferred.
A valid Food Handler’s Certificate.
Strong organizational and teamwork skills.
The ability to follow NYC Aging, DOHMH, and food safety requirements.
The ability to stand for extended periods, bend, and perform other physical kitchen duties.
The ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
