This past Friday, the Mt. Ararat Senior Center was filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt emotion as members gathered to celebrate May birthdays — but this celebration was unlike any other. Attendees were treated to a very special performance from the cast of No Dress Rehearsal, a powerful one-act play written by the incredibly talented Karen Holder.
A unique blend of theater, music, and dance, No Dress Rehearsal is a culturally rich and deeply personal production that draws from Karen Holder’s early life experiences growing up in Trinidad & Tobago. Through compelling storytelling and dynamic character work, Karen masterfully portrays at least five distinct characters, taking the audience on an exhilarating journey through a strict upbringing, a search for love and acceptance, and a confrontation with personal truth, personified in the character of Miguel.
The production featured moving performances by Karen Holder and David Duncan, with original music by Nick Wilson and choreography by Jackie Brathwaite. Directed by Evria Ince Waldron and produced by NIA Theatrical Production Company, Inc., this special presentation was a gift to our members — sparking conversation, laughter, and even a few joyful tears.
